I saw that yesterday, and looked Ernest up (being the historian that I am). Those 17th century European wars are simply impossible to keep up with, there were so damned many of them. But I do find it interesting that somebody thought to keep Ernest’s hat, and that we still have it almost 400 years later.

About 25 years ago, my family traveled out to Big Bend, TX, which, if you don’t know, is way the heck out in the mostly desert part of West Texas, along the Rio Grande . We were having dinner at the only restaurant for miles and miles when a pickup pulled in and lurched to a stop. An older gentleman got out, shirt open to a bare sun-darkened chest,  carrying a bottle of whiskey and wearing a pistol at his side. He said that he only came for something to pour his whiskey into and, after the waitress offered to hold his gun for him, he sat at our table and began to talk. His hame was Howard. He had lots of stories, but h e told one particularly interesting story about working for the CIA and parachuting into Cambodia while high on LSD. I have no reason to doubt the veracity of that tale. He had an old cowboy hat on, and it had a worn out hole in the front of it. My sister-in-law, with the most innocent yet serious face imaginable, said, “Howard, is that a bullet hole in your hat?” And he replied, “Why yes it is, young lady.” And proceeded into another tale of his exploits in Southeast Asia. Quite a character, that Howard. And exactly the sort of person I’d expect to find in the wide open spaces of West Texas.

Too cool. Great story. Sounds like I could listen to Howard all day.

Sorry for the repost so here’s another one from the Riijksmueseum.

Cool stockings, yo. No apologies necessary. I’m an art junkie, too.
